Frequently Asked Questions

Can a smart home system monitor things like water meters, alarms and tank temperatures?

Halo has some great accessories and components, which are not available on other systems. One such great accessory is our pulse counting temperature module. This module is battery powered and allows you to connect anything you want into the pulse counting input, including an intruder alarm output, a water meter and even a panic button. The pulses are counted and can be used to monitor whatever you connect to the input and show you the status on your Halo App. It could even be your front door or your garden gate; the ideas are limited only by your imagination!

On the same module, we have a temperature sensor input, which you can connect a small temperature sensor on a lead.

How much money can I save by installing a smart heating or smart home system myself?

Most systems can be installed in around 90 minutes, costing you between £100 and £150 by one of our approved installers. If you prefer to do the installation work yourself, this will save you around £100, but the system comes with full installation instructions in case you prefer to do it yourself!

How long does it take to install a smart heating or smart home system?

Most people have a simple combination boiler in their homes, which is gas powered and works with a wall mounted thermostat or thermostatic radiator valves, and sometimes both. Halo can be installed on one of these types of common systems in around 90 minutes, costing you between £100 and £150. We have fixed installation fees for all our products and a product selector, so if you want to know how much an installation would be for your home, please get in touch.

Can I work out how much my electricity bill will be with a smart heating or smart home system?

One feature of Halo is that our Smart Switches and Smart Plugs all record the electricity consumption for connected appliances and our Smart Meters record and store electricity consumption for your entire home! Within the Halo app, you can setup how much your electricity costs, which is shown on your electricity bill, measure in Kilowatt Hours (kWH). Once Halo knows how much your electricity costs for each kWH, we show you exactly how much each appliance costs to run in your local currency. If you have a Smart Meter installed on your incoming power feed, we will also show you the total cost of your electricity as you use it. By showing you this information in your app or via your voice controlled device, you will naturally start to be more careful about how you use your energy, tending to turn things off more often when you don’t need them or turn down temperature settings where you can see the affect of your actions in energy reduction and real cash savings.

Halo’s free apps for Android and Apple iOS let you and your family take control of energy, equipment and costs from anywhere in the world.

Can I link my smart heating or home automation system to my solar PV system?

Halo has a full range of advanced solar PV power control devices. These devices which are easily installed connect to your Halo App and system and allow you to make the most of the energy you generate within your own home. Selling energy from your solar PV system back to the electricity producers does not generate much money and so it is far more efficient to use the energy you create within your own home to heat hot water or use on electric wall heaters and other appliances. Our Elios4you range of solar PV control devices work seamlessly with the rest of the Halo devices. The Elios4You range of devices needs to be installed by an electrician and so if you are interested then please do get in touch with us by using the contact us link on our website.

Will a smart heating or home automation system work with a boiler and hot water tank?

When systems have a separate hot water tank they are normally equipped with a control valve. In this situation a Halo Smart Relay is used to control the valve. A time schedule configured in the app or based on your location will enable and disable the Smart Relay, which opens and closes the valve according to your requirements for your hot water demand. The installation of the Smart Relay is simple and its connections merely replace the hot water connections for your time clock which you will already have on your wall or at your boiler. If you have a thermostat then the smart version will replace your mechanical thermostat directly. If you don’t have a thermostat we always advise to install one and connect that to a smart relay to control your heating. This gives you better comfort and better control and allows you to save more energy and also save money from your energy bills.

You can set the times for which you want the hot water to come on and off in the app which is available from the Apple App Store or Google play. You can have the app on as many devices as you like. You can also connect Halo to your Amazon Alexa or Google Home voice control system in minutes.

Will my smart home work if I have an existing thermostat?

If you have an existing thermostat then that thermostat can be removed from the wall and replaced by a Halo Smart thermostat using the existing wiring to connect up your heating system to Halo. This is the most simple installation and only requires one of our thermo kits which are priced at £129.99. If you have an existing time clock on the wall or at the boiler you can then simply set this to a 24-hour setting (always on) and use the Halo Smart Living app to set up your time schedules for your heating and also have the heating come on/off based on your location and the location of any other app users. The existing time clock is no longer needed so if you prefer you can remove this time clock.

Will a smart heating or home automation system work with a combination boiler?

Halo systems work perfectly with heating systems that use a gas fired combination boiler. If you have an existing thermostat then that thermostat can be removed from the wall and replaced by a Halo Smart Thermostat using the existing wiring to connect up your heating system to Halo. This is the most simple installation and only requires one of our thermo kits. The existing wiring that controls your boiler will be reused and our smart thermostat has a simple connection on the back to connect to this cable. You can then set your existing time clock to a 24-hour setting and use the Halo Smart Living app to set up your time schedules for your heating and also have the heating come on/off based on your location and the location of any other app users. If your home heating system has a combination boiler and no thermostat, you can install a Halo Thermostat anywhere in your hall or living area and install a Halo Smart Relay onto your boiler control and link the thermostat wirelessly to the Smart Relay so, that the boiler will come on/off according to your requirements. Halo’s free app for Android and Apple iOS let you and your family take control of energy, equipment and costs from anywhere in the world.

Can I install a smart heating or smart home system myself?

Installation of a Smart Heating or Home Automation system requires the connection of devices to mains electricity when controlling boilers, hot water immersions or wall heaters. If you are competent or a trained electrician or you know a trained or skilled person, you can buy one of our kits and other components and install it yourself. If you just want to control things with smart plugs or replace your radiator Thermostatic Radiator Valve (TRV) actuators for our Smart TRVs then you can do this yourself because setting up the Halo White Box is really easy using our app for iOS and Android. You will be able to also add voice control yourself for Amazon Alexa or Google Home.

How will home automation and smart heating affect our future?

When you have a Halo Smart Living system installed, it will affect your future in a way where you will wonder how you lived without it! When you are out of your home you can see what is going on with your heating system, solar system (if you have one) and all your connected appliances. This means you can control things when you are not there, such as turning lights on or off, which is a huge convenience. You will experience reduced energy bills and therefore save money, which you can use for other things. Using Halo means you can live your life how you choose, where the system will bring the heating on/off based on your location rather than on fixed time schedules, which means that if you choose to stay out longer than planned, the heating and connected appliances will stay off until you come home. This includes when you might go on holiday. In the future, these things will become normal and the systems will work in harmony with our lifestyles without having to spend time changing settings or making adjustments. The solution will manage our home comfort, our energy consumptions and appliance control perfectly on our behalf.

How does a smart home automation system work?

Most smart home systems have some kind of Hub or Smart Box as the starting point of the system. Halo has a White Box. In simple terms, devices that control and monitor things in your home are connected using a secure type of wireless technology to a Whitebox and this connects through the internet securely to computers based in the cloud so, that your apps can communicate with your Whitebox wherever you are in the world, and at home. The White Box connects to the internet through the home router using a cable provided and is powered with a power supply, also provided. The Halo White Box communicates to our servers and makes a connection between your home and the Halo App, running on your smart phone when you are out and about. The Halo White Box also has a wireless connection, which links all the components of the system together and handles any different messages between them. For example, when setting up Halo systems, the Smart Thermostat, Smart Relays, Smart Switches and other components are linked to the Halo White Box using the app and when you setup times for things to go on and off, these times are kept safe in the whole box and sent to the connected devices to make sure everything works how you want it to.

Google Home and Amazon Alexa voice control devices communicate with your Halo Smart Home system securely by taking your voice signals from Google or Amazon (depending on your device) and passing them to our secure cloud computers and matching those commands with a unique identifier for your Halo White Box before them being used in your own home to get the what you have asked for or turn something on or off.

What do I need to be able to build a smart home system?

A White Box is the starting point of your system. The White Box connects to the internet through the home router using a cable provided and is powered with a power supply, also provided. Halo allows you to easily change the time settings for your heaters and the Smart Thermostat makes sure that the temperature is controlled properly without having heaters on when they are not needed, improving comfort levels. These changes are done using the free app for your smartphone where heaters can be turned on/off based on your location, which is the easiest way to save energy usage, money and take care of the environment at the same time.
